Other Common Questions
Which water ionizer is best for my source water?
Our water ionizers work well with both city and well water sources, however you may want to consider adding additional filters to take dissolved solids and chemicals out of your source water – or – pretreat your water with minerals from our 12” mineral filter if your source water lacks minerals.
Do you have city or well water?
The Aqua Ionizer Deluxe 7.0™ and the Aqua Ionizer Deluxe 9.0™ both utilize the same technology to create alkaline, ionized water, and work well with city and well water. However, source water that comes from a reverse osmosis system may lack the minerals, like Calcium and Magnesium, required for the diverter to properly function.
City water quality, or that which comes from the municipalities, varies greatly across the country. While Las Vegas is known to have some of the worst water of in the states, Mt. Shasta, California residents enjoy fresh spring water through their taps year round.
If your source water tests for having a variety of chemicals and minerals you’d rather not have in your daily drinking water, consider adding a tri-part filter to your water ionizer purchase. Our trip-art filters clean and treat over a 1,000 gallons of water per cartridge, and remove 99% of harmful toxins and chemicals from your source water prior to ionization.
How does a water ionizer work?
Water ionizers can dramatically change the properties of ordinary tap water. Through the electrolysis process a concentration of alkaline and acidic water is formed. This process also conditions the water to have a small molecule size, making it more hydrating for the body.
Water ionizers work by concentrating the beneficial minerals in source water.
Through the electro-dialysis process antioxidants are formed. Because electro-dialysis is an electrically induced process, it leaves the water buzzing with extra electrons, which give the water a negative charge.
The negative charge of the water, is measured in ORP. Water ionizers generate water with a high negative ORP, because it concentrates water with spare electrons, or electron donors. These electron-donors have the ability to neutralize free-radicals, and remove them from your body.
In addition to the water ionization process (electro-dialsysis) many water ionizers, including the Aqua Ionizer Deluxe 7.0™ and Aqua Ionizer Deluxe 9.0™ include large carbon filters, which remove chlorine, organic and dissolved solids. You can also add advanced outside filtration such as our tri-part, 3 stage filtration add-on.
To put it simply, water ionizers work by concentrating the “good minerals and molecules” and remove the bad ones – creating an antioxidant rich solution that also helps in restoring and maintaining the pH balance of your body!
How does Air Water Life® compare with Kangen™ water ionizers?
Kangen™ is a trademarked term by Enagic®, a multi-level-marketing company based in Japan. Compare prices, features and benefits between us and Kangen™ of owning an Aqua Ionizer Deluxe™ series water ionizer. We’ve written a great article comparing the Leveluk™ series of water ionizers used to produce.
How does alkaline ionized water differ from bottled water?
You may have seen bottles of alkaline water at your local grocery store. The pH of the water in the bottles of alkaline water you get from the store typically range from 8.0 to 8.8 alkaline, which is safe for drinking.
Here are the main differences between Alkaline Ionized Water (from a water ionizer machine) and Bottled Alkaline Water you get from the store:
- Bottled alkaline water uses chemicals and pH Buffers. Bottled alkaline water is made alkaline with mineral or chemical pH buffers added to the water. Water Ionizers create alkaline drinking water naturally, and are chemical free.
- Bottled alkaline water has ZERO antioxidant value. Bottled alkaline water has a positive ORP. Water ionizers create alkaline drinking water with a high NEGATIVE -ORP.
- Bottle alkaline water is a costs too much! Bottled alkaline water ranges from $1.86 – $2.46 per liter. After the initial purchase, a Water Ionizer will produce alkaline water for less than a penny per liter.
Another added benefit to making your own alkaline ionized water is the reduction of waste materials, and a smaller carbon footprint. A lot of energy and materials are required to make and transport bottled water, which is partly why the cost is so high. And since bottles of water are only used once, they usually go from the manufacturer, to the retailer, to you, into the trash. Making a very short life-cycle for the product, one that may even considered wasteful.
What are some of the benefits of drinking alkaline water?
Water is the most important nutrient to the human body. As little as a 1-2% drop in hydration can effect all systems of the body. Alkaline ionized water has some extra benefits as well including a better rate of hydration, a higher rate of natural antioxidants and it tastes smoother. Read more alkaline water benefits here.
What is ORP and -ORP?
ORP and -ORP is measure of oxidation reduction potential in a liquid, such as soda, water, green tea and coffee. When a substance has a -ORP, it is through to neutralize free radicals, and uptake rogue oxygen atoms that may damage healthy cells in the body.
You may have heard that green tea is high in antioxidants, which is true. On average a cup of green tea will have a -ORP of 120mV.
On the opposite side of the ORP scale is positive ORP. A positive ORP will cause excessive oxidation, and free radicals in the body. Most soda products (acidic) and carbonated beverages have a positive ORP.
Surprisingly, most bottled water actually contributes to oxidation, because it has a positive ORP.
Negative -ORP is highly reactive, and dynamic, and does not “stay” in solution for more than a few days before returning to a neutral, or positive state. This why ionized water is best consumed immediately after it’s produced. Ionized water will ‘go flat’ and loose and antioxidant qualities with a few days.
You can see the ‘off gassing’ of ionized water as oxygen bubbles begin to collect in a glass of ionized water. As more and more of these oxygen bubbles collect and are ‘off gassed’ the -ORP will drop.
The Aqua Ionizer Deluxe 7.0™ can create a highly antioxidant rich solution, with a -ORP of up to 800 depending on source water. If you consume this water immediately after it’s produced by the water ionizer machine you enjoying solution that is substantially high in oxidation reduction potential (free radical neutralizing).
The Aqua Ionizer Deluxe 9.0™ can create a water with a -ORP of 840, which is on the top end of the spectrum. At the “daily drinking” setting you will enjoy a -ORP of approximately 300, more than 3x the antioxidants found in a cup of green tea!
Can alkaline water help with acid re-flux (GERD)?
There are a number of people who have experienced relief from their GERD (acid reflux) discomfort after drinking the water. In fact, Air Water Life® CEO Richard Mayer shared his experience with acid-reflux prescription medication and the relief from acid reflux he experienced in this interview.
Will a water ionizer install on my kitchen / bathroom faucet?
The Aqua Ionizer Deluxe™ series of water ionizers are designed to install on any standard kitchen / bathroom faucet. Each unit includes a universal diverter which can use your faucets standard inside, or outside threading. We have a detailed instructional video for your water ionizer installation you can watch here.
What is the total electroplate surface area for a given water ionizers, and more importantly, does a larger size actually translate to better performance?
While plate size and total surface area alone tells you nothing directly about water ionizer performance, extremes in either direction, i.e., a very small total electroplate surface area or an overly large exaggerated surface area, should raise potential warning flags.
For example, an extremely small plate surface may literally just not have enough electrolysis contact area for the water to be properly ionized and an extremely large plate surface area may add high cost to the price of the water ionizer but do nothing to increase actual performance relative to a less expensive but more efficiently designed water ionizer with average size plates.
A perfect example of this is Enagic Kangen’s water ionizers which, while they do tend to have much larger overall surface area than other water ionizers, are regularly matched or outperformed on both the pH and ORP scales by water ionizer brands that cost thousands less than Kangen’s machines.
What type of electroplates does the Aqua Ionizer Deluxe™ series of water ionizers feature?
The Aqua Ionizer Deluxe 5.0™ features 5 platinum dipped titanium electrolysis plates.
The Aqua Ionizer Deluxe 7.0™ features 7 platinum dipped titanium electrolysis plates.
The Aqua Ionizer Deluxe 9.0™ features 9 platinum dipped titanium electrolysis plates.
Most leading water ionizer brands typically have either 5 or 7 electroplates. As a general rule, while 5-plate water ionizers are usually slightly less expensive, 7-plate units tend to perform better on all performance measures most people look for when purchasing a water ionizer, e.g., wider pH and ORP ranges (see Question #7 below). There are exceptions however. Some very efficiently designed 5-plate water ionizers perform as well as some lesser quality 7-plate ones. So, whether it’s a 5 or 7 electroplate water ionizer, look for the features and performance you need at a price you can afford.
How many acidic and alkaline water presets does the Aqua Ionizer Deluxe™ feature?
To make it easy to quickly activate and dispense your desired alkaline, purifier/neutral or acidic water setting, most modern water ionizers have between 5 and 9 pH level presets. The preset common to almost all water ionizers is a daily alkaline drinking water. The second most common is usually a neutral pH option where water may be filtered but is neither alkaline nor acidic. The other presents may be made up of any combination of acidic and alkaline water pH levels. Obviously, more presets offer you a wider choice of water options. But, since most people rarely use more than 4 or 5 alkaline or acidic presets plus the neutral water option, you’ll probably never need or use more than 7 presents.
Does the Aqua Ionizer Deluxe™ water ionizer require any scheduled maintenance?
The Aqua Ionizer Deluxe™ water ionizer includes a two self cleaning features. The first self cleaning feature activates after every use and normally lasts between 5-10 seconds. Every 10 to 12 gallons the greater cleaning cycle is activated. During the greater cleaning cycle the units display will turn red and it will play Fur Elise for 30 seconds to one minute. These periodic cleaning cycles help to reduce the need for frequent maintenance. We recommend every 6 months (or 1,000 gallons) you clean the unit thoroughly by descaling it. Descaling agent is included with your water ionizer, and descaling instructions can be found in your user manual.
Because the minerals and chemicals in tap water can cause scaling and corrosion to develop on the water electroplates, it is very important that you look for a water ionizer that has one or more auto-cleaning features. This is especially true for mesh and sprayed electroplate water ionizers since the rougher plate surface increases the likelihood of scaling and corrosion. Ideally, you should look for a water ionizer that cleans itself by reversing plate polarity for at least a few seconds after each use and conducts an extended cleaning cycle after every 10 or 12 gallons of use.
Does the Aqua Ionizer Deluxe™ include a water filter?
Most modern water ionizers have built in water filters to help remove chlorine, benzene, VOCs and other harmful water pollutants from your tap water. However, some water ionizer companies’ filters are expensive to replace and/or actually add chemicals or mineral compounds to their filters to try to artificially manipulate electrolysis, i.e., they’re adding more chemicals to your water than they’re removing. When buying a water ionizer carefully consider how much you’ll spend replacing filters annually and what chemical or mineral compounds these filters contain. For example, Air Water Life water ionizers use active carbon filters that last up to a full year under normal use conditions, don’t inject chemicals or minerals into the water and sell for only $40.
By contrast, Jupiter’s Biostone filters use the mineral compound Tourmaline to boost ionization and cost $80-$90 to replace and Enagic Kangen water ionizers with filters retail for $110 each and use sodium chloride (salt) and sodium hypochlorite (bleach) and to artificially expand the unit’s pH and ORP ranges.
Is alkaline ionized water safe to drink?
Given that a water ionizer is an electrical device through which water is being processed and dispensed, it’s essential that your water ionizer be certified by Electrical Test Laboratory (ETL) or another recognized national or international electronics testing facility as safe. The newest water ionizer industry safety enhancement, developed right here at Air Water Life, is the use of FDA plastics for all the parts through which water is filtered or dispense. We are currently the only water ionizer company offering this feature.
Water ionizers like the Aqua Ionizer Deluxe™ are approved as medical devices in Japan and are now used by tens of thousands of people world wide who report experiencing the health benefits you can only get from alkaline ionized water.
Does Air Water Life® offer a satisfaction guarantee?
Yes. Air Water Life® offers a 30 day satisfaction guarantee on all products. Additionally most of our top selling water ionizers, such as the Aqua Ionizer Deluxe 9.0™ includes a lifetime warranty. Any water ionizer company that makes a quality water ionizer that can stand up to their marketing claims, should stand behind their product with both a satisfaction guaranty allowing you to return the product within a minimum of 30 days no questions asked and a product warranty agreeing to repair or replace your water ionizer under normal use conditions for at least 5 years.
If the company doesn’t offer both (satisfaction guarantee AND a warranty) shop elsewhere. Air Water Life® offers you both a 30 day no-questions asked satisfaction guarantee and a unlimited lifetime warranty on the Aqua Ionizer Deluxe 9.0™.
